Flamenco Costumes

The very first flamenco school was opened in the heart of Andalucia, the city of Sevilla. Considered the birthplace of this ever evolving art form. Sevilla is also where the clothes, we recognise today as traditional flamenco costumes, first made their appearance.

Traditionally, the 'feria de abril de Sevilla' was a livestock show, until the show became extinct and only the fiesta remained! It was attended by some of the most important people in Sevilla, as it still is today. Every year, thousands of people descend upon Sevilla's world famous 'Plaza de Toros'. In the beginning, the women of the marketers would were dress in all their finery to attend. The polko dot flamenco dress was created. For men, the black and white 'traje de corto' became a tradition. Tight fitting trousers and short fitting Valero or Paseo jacket, plus a good pair of sturdy boots. This traditional dress can still be found at costume outlets, many of which specialise in 'everything flamenco'. Some men opt for more detailing, including three tassles along the outer seem of the trouser, just a few inches from the hemline. Not forgetting the Cordobes hat! Complete with bandana detail. Not forgetting the more traditional woollen Sevillano Hat, he ultimate addition for true flamenco style!

The style of the flamenco dress has been chopped and changed over the years. Changing, as trends do. However, things do seem to have taken a full circle, with traditional styles once again in favour. Black and red polko is back! The spot is a bit larger than before, but the shawls, fans and costume jewellery are definitely 'IN'! There are some great suppliers of Spanish flamenco style costumes around. Some bits and pieces can be really inexpensive. How about a flamenco fan? Or shoes with polko dots! If you aren't so keen on the flouncy flamenco dresses, why not go for the women's three piece Andalucian costume? Try the classy Valero Jacket for size, with a crisp white shirt and bandana wrapped at the waist. The 'riding skirt' is sleek fitting and elegant. To complete your outfit, don't forget the hat and pendant ear-rings!

Jewellery, especially in recent years, has become and essential part of the flamenco costume. Ear-rings are traditionally large drop pendants, very Arabic in style. Intricate designs, originally in silver, with precious stones. They can still be purchased, beautiful but can be a bit pricey! There are some fabulous imitations around, much more economical, and just as authentic in style. Large combs are also worn in the hair, called a Peineta. Mother of pearl and tortoiseshell are the most authentic. Although, for obvious reasons, today you will find some brilliant imitations. A tortoise has rights you know! Flamenco costumes are available all over the world, how you were it is up to you!
