began playing the guitar at the age of 14. He formed his own band, the “Hi Fi’s”, which became extremely popular in the Long Island area during the late 50’s. The group was later reformed as the “Joe Sherri Trio” which spanned an 18 year period of performing for night clubs all around Long Island as well as most of the major catering establishments. Joe’s early experience bridged all music forms from 50’s Sock Hops, to Latin, to Top 40.
At the age of 27 and while active with his band, Joe was strongly influenced by the music of Jose Feliciano. Joe subsequently began formal training on the classical guitar under Francisco Pantaleo of Dix Hills, NY. This was followed by 3 years of in-depth study of both Classical and Spanish Flamenco styles with Juan de la Mata, graduate professor of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid. Joe’s advanced training in Concert Flamenco was continued for another 2 years under the tutelage of world-renowned Flamenco guitarist, Mario Escudero.

Temas de Flemenco |
In 1971, Joe teamed with the Alicia Laura Flamenco Dance Company where he gained experience, performing backup for dancers. He then formed “Temas de Flamenco”, a group of Flamenco concert performers that appeared frequently throughout the New York area. Venues included the Rockland Center for the Performing Arts, Eisenhower Park, the Great Neck House, Stony Brook University, Hofstra University, CW Post College, and the Huntington Arts Council at Hecksher Park. Joe as well as Temas de Flamenco also appeared at numerous night clubs in the New York City area such as the Chateu Madrid, Tio Pepe and La Bilbainia. During this period, Joe was also a guest performer on the Cablevision production, “Long Island Tonight”CH67. Joe was an invited performer and tutor for a number of Guitar Workshops conducted at CW Post College and at “My Fathers Place”, Roslyn, NY. His flamenco group was disbanded at the end of 1976 when Joe relocated to California for his engineering career.
Joe now resides on Long Island actively teaching guitar and performing in restaurants and at private functions. He has performed at the Copacabana in New York during November of 2004, 2005 and 2006. His dynamic and colorful style of playing the guitar is supported by the techniques developed from his excellent formal training and varied background both as a solo artist and a bandleader. His style encompasses a-wide range of Spanish music from the contemporary Latin sounds of South Beach, as well as Gypsy Flamenco. He enjoys performing the musical styles of Montoya, Sabicas, Paco Pena, Escudero, Ottmar Liebert, the Gypsy Kings, the late Charlie Byrd and others, as well as his own original compositions. Joe has also locally released 10 CD’s covering his varied style of guitar playing. They are available during his public performances.
